Kampala (Uganda) 16 January 2025 (SPS)- Chargé d’Affaires at the Sahrawi Embassy in Uganda, Mr. Mohamed Ali Daf, advocated for the rights of the Sahrawi people to freedom and independence during the opening ceremony of Africa Youth Congress 2025, which started Today morning in Kampala, Uganda.

The high-profile event, gathering over 1,500 delegates from 51 African nations to deliberate on the theme, “Africanism: Modernize Along Culture”, is hosted by the Ugandan government under the patronage of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, and in collaboration with the African Kin Education Resource Centre (AKERC), seeks to strengthen African unity and promote cultural modernization.

Mohamed Ali Daf delivered a powerful address during the Congress’s opening session. Daf praised the Ugandan leadership under President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for championing African solidarity and hosting this critical event.

Daf further underscored the significance of African youth as the continent’s driving force for unity and prosperity. He used the platform to highlight the Sahrawi people's decades-long struggle for self-determination.

Tracing the history of Western Sahara from Spanish colonization in 1884 to the ongoing occupation by Morocco, Mohamed Ali Daf called for unwavering support from African nations to uphold international law and the Sahrawi people’s right to independence.

“The Sahrawi people have endured over 50 years of struggle for their freedom,” Daf stated. “We call upon the youth of Africa to join us in the fight for justice, self-determination, and a future where all nations on this continent can thrive in unity and peace.”

Daf’s intervention was met with widespread solidarity. Delegates from Uganda and other countries delivered emphatic statements condemning Morocco’s actions in Western Sahara and reaffirmed their commitment to the Sahrawi Republic's independence.

The Congress participants collectively called for adherence to United Nations resolutions and the implementation of a referendum for self-determination in Western Sahara.

The Africa Youth Congress 2025, running from January 16–17, features keynote speeches, breakout discussions, and is expected to adopt a declaration outlining actionable steps for advancing African unity and development.

The event serves as a testament to Africa’s commitment to collective progress and the enduring solidarity among its nations in addressing shared challenges.

As the Congress unfolds, the Sahrawi Republic’s participation reinforces the urgent need for African voices to rally behind just causes and uphold the principles of sovereignty, freedom, and dignity for all. (SPS)
