Shaheed Elhafed (refugee camps), 9 December 2024 (SPS) - The European Parliament hosts Monday an international conference on the Sahrawi issue titled "International Conference of Lawyers for Western Sahara." The conference will cover several topics, including the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and ways to implement international law in Western Sahara.
The two-day conference is organized by the Association of Lawyers for Western Sahara in cooperation with members of the European Parliament, the office of the Polisario Front in Europe and the European Union. It will witness wide participation from deputies, lawyers, politicians, and activists from the occupied Sahrawi territories.
The conference will address various topics, including the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and the implementation of international law in Western Sahara, as well as the situation of human rights in the occupied territories and the issue of natural resources, which has become a central theme in light of the decisions made by the European Court of Justice on October 4.
According to statements by the Sahrawi ambassador in charge of Europe and European institutions, Mansour Omar, the conference aims to address numerous issues, including mobilizing support for the Sahrawi people's struggle and coordinating legal and political efforts among supporters and experts to counter the defiance of European countries against European courts and international legitimacy.
On this occasion, Mansour Omar reiterated that "the Polisario Front has managed to break the power of Morocco and its allies with its legal victory," stressing that the Sahrawi people's right is inalienable and that the Polisario Front will seize every opportunity, particularly the recent decisions of the European Court of Justice, to enforce respect for their rights and protect their interests.
