Lisbon (Portugal), November 28, 2024 (SPS) - Diplomats, academics, artists, and public figures from Portugal signed a declaration on the occasion of the 48th conference of the European Coordination for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, affirming their support for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence, and condemning the unjust Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara.
The declaration places the issue of Western Sahara in a historical and legal context, emphasizing that since the 1970s, "all legal international declarations agree that Western Sahara is a distinct and separate territory from Morocco and is awaiting an incomplete decolonization process. The Sahrawi people have the established right to freely and fairly exercise their right to self-determination and to choose their political future democratically."
The statement notes that this issue is enshrined in the "United Nations Charter, the numerous resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Security Council, the International Court of Justice in 1975, the founding charter of the African Union in 2000, the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (2022), and the Court of Justice of the European Union (1916, 1918, 1921, and 1924)."
