UN envoy De Mistura arrives at Sahrawi refugee camps

Shaheed El-Hafed (Sahrawi refugee camps), 3 October 2024 (SPS) - The personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, arrived Thursday at the Sahrawi refugee camps to meet with the Sahrawi side.

De Mistura begins his visit by going to some facilities, offices, and institutions of the Sahrawi Republic and meets with a number of Sahrawi officials. At the end of his visit, the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy for Western Sahara will be received by the President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali.

The Sahrawi side indicated that Staffan de Mistura's visit to the Sahrawi refugee camps and his meetings with Sahrawi officials will provide an opportunity to reaffirm the Sahrawi people's commitment to their right to self-determination, freedom, and independence.

The representative of the Polisario Front to the UN and coordinator with the United Nations Mission for the Organization of a Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Mohamed Sidi Omar, emphasized on Wednesday, in a statement, that De Mistura's visit" is part of the preparation for his briefing to the Security Council on October 16 and is part of his efforts to deepen his contacts with the Polisario Front as well as with the occupying Moroccan state."
