Occupied El Aaiún, September 21, 2026 (SPS) – The League for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners in Moroccan Occupation Prisons announced that Sahrawi civilian prisoner Mohamed Bourial, a member of the Gdeim Izik group, will begin a 48-hour warning hunger strike on Tuesday at Ait Melloul Prison in Morocco, in protest against the continued disregard of his legitimate and legal demands and the prison administration’s refusal to address them seriously.
The warning hunger strike comes amid the harsh conditions endured by prisoner Mohamed Bourial, which have been exacerbated by the isolation imposed on him since 2017. He has been deprived of contact with his fellow prisoners, family visits, and some of his most basic rights guaranteed under international human rights law.
According to the prisoner’s family, his demands include the implementation of the recommendations of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Committee against Torture, as well as his immediate release and that of all his fellow members of the Gdeim Izik group. He is also demanding an end to the isolation imposed on him since 2017, which has separated him from all his fellow prisoners.
He has further called for access to family visits and his transfer to the occupied city of El Aaiún to be closer to his family, in addition to the right to use the telephone and communicate with the outside world.
Should the Moroccan occupation prison administration continue to disregard his legitimate and legal demands, civilian prisoner Mohamed Bourial will continue his warning hunger strike in an escalating manner until all his demands are met.
