Nairobi, Kenya, May 9, 2024 (SPS) - The proceedings of the second African Summit on Fertilizers and Soil Health, held in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, has concluded today, Thursday, with the participation of a prominent Sahrawi delegation led by the Prime Minister, Mr. Buchiraya Hamoudi Beyun, representing the President of the Republic, Mr. Brahim Ghali.

The Prime Minister delivered a speech on behalf of the President of the Republuc in front of African heads of state and governments, expressing gratitude on behalf of the Sahrawi government to its Kenyan counterpart for hosting the distinguished summit. He also expressed sincere condolences and deep solidarity with the Kenyan government and people following the recent floods.

In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized that while the Sahrawi Republic faces significant challenges regarding declining soil quality, limited agricultural productivity, and food insecurity, similar to many African countries, it is simultaneously engaged in a just struggle to end the colonization of its national territory and ensure the self-determination of its people. These challenges are interconnected and intertwined. He affirmed that due to the continued illegal Moroccan occupation of parts of the Sahrawi Republic's territory, the Sahrawi people face systematic looting of their natural resources, such as the Bou Craa phosphate mine, one of the world's largest and highest-quality phosphate mines. This represents a blatant violation of the principle of permanent sovereignty of peoples over their natural resources, based on the rights of peoples and nations to manage their natural resources in a way that contributes to their development and well-being.

President Brahim Ghali reiterated the full commitment of the Sahrawi Republic's government to implementing the Nairobi Declaration on Fertilizers and Soil Health in Africa, as well as supporting research and development on fertilizer use through the activation of the African Center for Fertilizer Development in Harare, Zimbabwe.

It is worth mentioning that the summit culminated in the adoption of the Nairobi Declaration, which aims to achieve the objectives of Africa's Agenda 2023. An action plan for the next decade was also adopted, which will provide concrete recommendations on the steps that African leaders and relevant entities should take over the next ten years to enhance soil health, increase crop yields, and improve agricultural profitability.
