Occupied El-Aaiún, 17 February 2024 (SPS) - The Committee for the Protection of Sahrawi Civilian of the Collective of Sahrawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA) condemned the continuing acts of eviction, forced displacement, and seizure of properties belonging to Sahrawi civilians in the occupied territories by the Moroccan occupation forces, as a prelude to a wide-scale settlement.
The committee said in a statement on Saturday that the Moroccan occupation forces have been carrying out random campaigns targeting the properties of Sahrawi civilians located in the coastal strip of the Atlantic Ocean in the occupied part of Western Sahara and in other neighboring Sahrawi cities. A group of those affected by these dangerous and law-violating operations confirmed that the occupation forces do not hesitate to demolish and burn houses and seize the properties of Sahrawi civilians.
The committee did not rule out that the actions of the Moroccan occupation forces in evicting, forcibly displacing, and seizing private properties constitute elements of a crime of genocide, as they are associated with their attempt to establish and implement major settlement projects with the contribution of multinational institutions and companies. These projects deliberately aim to forcibly displace landowners in the occupied part of Western Sahara and replace them with settlers and users of different nationalities who also contribute to the looting of natural resources, in violation of the legal status of the Sahrawi people and international humanitarian law and the resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly, which classify the Western Sahara issue as a decolonization matter.
Therefore, the Sahrawi committee reiterated its "absolute" solidarity with all Sahrawi civilians affected by various crimes committed against them and their civil properties by the Moroccan occupation forces.
