Ait Melloul (Morocco), 8 March 2024 (SPS) - Sahrawi civilian prisoners from the "Akdim Izik" group, who are being held in Ait Melloul 2 prison on the outskirts of the southern Moroccan city of Agadir, will be holding a warning hunger strike on Thursday and Friday of next week. They are protesting the racist practices and violations imposed by the prison administration.
In protest of the deteriorating conditions of their detention and the racial discrimination committed against them by the prison director, the Sahrawi civilian prisoners in the group are launching a 48-hour warning hunger strike.
The "Association for the Protection of Sahrawi Prisoners" quoted the families of the Sahrawi civilian prisoners Mohammed Ahnini, Roh Bani, Brahim Dadi Ismaili, Said Ahmed Faraji, and Ayesh Lemjid, as saying that after being denied phone calls and threatened with being deprived of all basic and legitimate rights by the prison director, they decided to go on a 48-hour warning hunger strike.
Faced with this deplorable situation, the Sahrawi civilian prisoners in the Ait Melloul 2 local prison are calling on the International Committee of the Red Cross to intervene urgently and provide them with the necessary protection inside the prison, as well as to transfer them to prisons closer to the homes of their families and relatives. They are also calling for the prosecution of the director and all those involved in the deprivation and targeting they are experiencing inside the prison.
