Bir Lehlou (Sahrawi Republic), 15 September 2026 (SPS) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs affirmed that the organization by the Moroccan occupying state of what it described as an “electoral charade” in the occupied territories of the Sahrawi Republic constitutes a new provocation against the Sahrawi people and a further violation of the international status of Western Sahara, which has no sovereign ties with the Kingdom of Morocco.

In a statement, the Ministry strongly condemned this conduct, considering that the exaggerated participation rates announced in the occupied Sahrawi territories reflect attempts by the occupying power to impose a colonial fait accompli, violate international law, and involve Sahrawi citizens in political processes that do not represent their will.

The Sahrawi Government stressed that such practices will not undermine the Sahrawi people’s steadfastness or its commitment to its inalienable right to self-determination and independence, and to restoring its sovereignty over its entire national territory.

It called on the United Nations and the international community to assume their responsibilities towards Western Sahara, which is considered under international law a territory undergoing a decolonization process and land under illegal military occupation. It also held the Moroccan occupying state fully responsible for its actions that undermine security and stability in the region.
