Algiers, 5 October 2026 (SPS) – The Eighth Session of the Diplomatic Forum in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People was held at the Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Algiers, chaired by Zimbabwean Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. Vusumuzi Ntonga.

The meeting was attended by Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, representatives of 15 embassies, Sahrawi Ambassador to Algeria, member of the National Secretariat, Mr. Khatri Addouh, as well as representatives of the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Algerian National Committee for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People.

In his opening remarks, the chair highlighted the importance of strengthening international solidarity and intensifying diplomatic efforts in support of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, in light of the latest developments in the Sahrawi question.

For his part, the Sahrawi Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs briefed participants on the latest developments in the Sahrawi question, including the outcome of the latest UN Security Council meeting and Russia's position rejecting the US draft resolution, which he said was inconsistent with international legitimacy and international law.

The Minister stressed that the Sahrawi question remains a decolonization issue on the United Nations agenda since the 1960s, affirming that its resolution must be based on international legitimacy and ensure the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence.

The meeting provided an opportunity for ambassadors and participants to exchange views and discuss the latest developments concerning the Sahrawi question.

In press statements on the sidelines of the meeting, the Sahrawi Ambassador to Algeria, Mr. Khattri Addouh, stressed that a settlement of the Western Sahara conflict can only be achieved by allowing the Sahrawi people to freely express their will through the exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination under United Nations supervision.
