Shaheed El-Hafed (Refugee Camps) – The President of the Sahrawi National Committee for Human Rights, Abba Al-Haissan, stressed that the retaliatory crimes committed by the Moroccan occupation state against unarmed Sahrawi civilians in the occupied territories have reached dangerous levels, necessitating urgent intervention from the international community, particularly the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
In a letter addressed to Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the ICRC, he drew the international organization’s attention to the escalating systematic attacks carried out by Moroccan occupation forces against human rights activists, journalists, and bloggers. He stressed that the continued international silence regarding these violations only emboldens the Moroccan occupation to escalate its repressive practices.
He warned that the situation in Moroccan prisons has become increasingly dire, with Sahrawi political prisoners—particularly the Gdeim Izik group—enduring tragic conditions devoid of basic human dignity. He noted that these prisoners have faced unfair trials and received harsh sentences in blatant disregard of international justice standards, as confirmed by reports from international observers.
In this context, he emphasized that the ICRC must break its silence and take a clear stance against Morocco’s crimes in Western Sahara. He called on the organization to conduct urgent field visits to Sahrawi prisoners in Moroccan prisons and to the occupied territories to document the daily atrocities faced by Sahrawi civilians.
