Addis Ababa (African Union), August 21, 2024 (SPS) - The Sahrawi Republic, represented by the Counselor at the Sahrawi Embassy in Addis Ababa, Amman Sidi Abdallah, participated in the 1229th meeting of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union held on Wednesday, via videoconference, on inclusive education in conflict situations in Africa, in the presence of members of the Peace and Security Council, members of the African Union, the regional economic groups, in addition to UNESCO and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
During the open session chaired by Ambassador Tebelelo Boang, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Botswana to the African Union and Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council for the month of August, there was an opening speech by Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union, a presentation by Professor Mohammed Belhocine, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of the African Union, a presentation by Bruce Mokaya Orina, Head of the Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, a speech by the representative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); speeches by members of the Peace and Security Council, speeches by member states of the African Union, and speeches by regional economic groups.
In his speech during the session, the Sahrawi delegate touched on the educational experience in the Sahrawi Republic over 48 years in parallel with the national liberation war against the Moroccan occupier, and the achievements made despite all the difficulties, challenges and lack of resources, and the policies pursued by the Moroccan occupier in the occupied cities in order to destroy our youth, steal their identity and displace them outside their homeland.
The Sahrawi delegate also participated, along with the representative of the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and the Advisor in Charge of African Union Affairs, Hamdi Salek, who presented a written presentation on the situation of education in the Sahrawi Republic (Sahrawi refugee camps, occupied parts of the Sahrawi Republic).
The session aims to identify challenges and explore strategies to promote inclusive education in conflict situations, with a focus on ensuring the right to education for all, regardless of background or circumstances.
