Shahid Al-Hafed, January 4, 2024 (SPS) - The Sahrawi National Committee for Human Rights confirmed that the inaction and silence of the United Nations encouraged the Moroccan occupying state to persist in its terrorist and barbaric policy in Western Sahara.
The committee confirmed, in a communiqué obtained by SPS, that the last attack by Moroccan drones against civilians from neighboring countries was due to the inaction of the United Nations Secretariat and the Security Council and their complete silence in the face of the criminal behavior of the Moroccan occupying forces, which encourages the latter to persist in its terrorist and barbaric practices in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
“It remains certain, the communiqué adds, that with the expansionist doctrine of the Makhzen regime and in the face of the international silence over its crimes, its violation of the rules of international humanitarian law, its targeting of defenseless civilians, and its impunity, the Makhzen will not hesitate to commit more crimes, which means further escalation and a threat to global peace and security”.
The committee explained that the Makhzen, with its current aggressive policy, aims to cover up its defeats and attempt to perpetuate its occupation of Western Sahara, heading towards throwing itself into the arms of the Zionist entity, which violates all standards of human rights structure in its criminal war against the Palestinian people, to support it and reproduce its aggression.
The communiqué added that the Moroccan occupation state is using this type of weapon as a result of its loss of the balance of power in favor of the Sahrawi fighters, who inflicted repeated defeats on the enemy during the first war of liberation, with which Morocco was forced to negotiate and sign a ceasefire agreement and agree to organize a referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people, which was not embodied on the ground due to the policy of double standards and the collusion of Western powers with the occupation and the shameful abandonment and complicity of Spain.
The Committee condemned the failure of United Nations bodies related to human rights to shoulder their responsibilities towards the people of Western Sahara, despite their careful knowledge of the systematic violations documented by numerous United Nations officials, such as the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and several special rapporteurs who called for the protection and monitoring of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, in addition to reports from prominent international organizations such as Amnesty International, Frontline and others.
It also denounced the failure of the International Committee of the Red Cross to protect Sahrawi citizens according to its area of competence, which is based on the requirements of the Fourth Geneva Convention relating to the protection of civilians in war zones. The Committee called on the ICRC to break the suspicious silence that afflicts it whenever it comes to violations of human and peoples’ rights in Western Sahara, considering their excuse for their inability to determine the facts due to the Moroccan ban on visiting the occupied territories as mere weak justifications to evade responsibility.
