Bir Lahlu, February 5, 2025 (SPS) - The Polisario Front urged the European Commission in a statement to act without delay to halt the deception and forgery concerning the country of origin and illegal exports from the occupied Western Sahara.
The statement noted that on January 28, 2025, the French Council of State issued an important ruling regarding the illegal exports of agricultural products from the occupied Western Sahara, following the historic decisions of the European Court of Justice on October 4, 2024.
Furthermore, the statement added that in line with the court's position on the distinct and separate customs status of the Sahrawi territory, the French Council of State ruled that products harvested there must carry the "correct labeling" and "indicate Western Sahara as the country of origin," as Western Sahara is a distinct region separate from the Kingdom of Morocco. As for the possibility of banning these products, "which do not comply with European labeling regulations," the ruling indicated that, given the exclusive jurisdiction of the European Union in international trade matters, it is up to the European Commission to intervene to ban their import.
The Polisario Front, as the legitimate and sole representative of the Sahrawi people, welcomed the French Council of State's decision, as it represents an important step towards the effective respect of the sovereign rights of the Sahrawi people.
