Boumerdès, August 11, 2025 (SPS) – Mr. Oubi Bushraya Al-Bashir, Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic in charge of Natural Resources and Related Legal Affairs, affirmed that the Sahrawi cause has achieved several judicial and legal gains concerning the plundering of its resources and the Moroccan occupation’s violation of its sovereignty over these resources.
In a statement to the Algerian Press Agency on the sidelines of the Summer University for Executives of the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi State, the Sahrawi Presidential Advisor in charge of Sahrawi resources stated that the Sahrawi people have made significant progress in the case of the exploitation of their country's resources by the Moroccan occupier. He indicated that these gains will be further strengthened and safeguarded in the future.
The speaker highlighted that the most recent of these gains was the latest ruling by the European Court of Justice on October 4, 2024, which affirmed the necessity of obtaining the Sahrawi people’s consent regarding decisions related to their land, sovereignty, airspace, and resources.
Mr. Oubi Bushraya added that among the most important achievements of the Sahrawi people is the confirmation of its customs sovereignty and the stipulation that products from Western Sahara must bear a label distinct from those originating from Morocco. The Sahrawi cause also secured another victory through the African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights' ruling in September 2022, which he described as a "historic turning point" regarding Morocco’s occupation of parts of Sahrawi territory, calling on nations and peoples to stand in solidarity with the Sahrawi people.
The Presidential Advisor emphasized that the Moroccan occupier is "trying by all means to compensate for its major shortcomings by allowing international parties to assist in the plundering of Sahrawi resources in exchange for granting it an illusory legitimacy."
He concluded by stating that all international organizations still recognize the legal status of Western Sahara as an occupied territory undergoing decolonization and affirm the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
