Mexico, 26 July 2026 (SPS) – The World Day Honouring former Sahrawi political prisoner, human rights defender, and President of the Sahrawi Body Against the Moroccan Occupation, Aminatou Haidar, was commemorated on Saturday at the National Museum of World Cultures in Mexico.
The event was organised by the Mexican Association of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, in coordination with the Sahrawi Embassy in Mexico, and brought together professors specialising in international law and human rights, along with a number of supporters of the Sahrawi people.
The programme featured a video message by activist Aminatou Haidar, as well as lectures delivered by university professors and the President of the Mexican Association of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People. A presentation was also given by Inés Miranda, President of the International Association of Lawyers for Western Sahara.
The speakers focused on the serious human rights violations committed by the Moroccan occupation and the suffering endured by the Sahrawi people, including the killing and displacement of unarmed Sahrawi civilians, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, mass graves, and the prosecution of activists before military courts in what they described as sham trials.
The World Day of Aminatou Haidar is regarded as one of the strongest expressions of international solidarity with the Sahrawi human rights defender and all Sahrawi political prisoners. It also serves to denounce the grave human rights violations committed by the Moroccan occupation authorities and to call for the release of Sahrawi political prisoner Naâma Asfari and his fellow prisoners.
