New York (United Nations), 2 February 2025 (SPS) - In a statement issued today, the Representation of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations expressed its sadness at the death of former German President Horst Köhler who served as the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara between 2017 and 2019, in addition to the important duties that he held in his country and internationally.

During his mission as Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General, the late President Horst Köhler demonstrated a high sense of responsibility and firm commitment in his quest for a just and lasting solution that would provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in accordance with the United Nations resolutions, the statement added.

The late President Horst Köhler was also such an impartial international mediator committed to the values of justice and peace, as he worked sincerely and rigorously and spared no effort in trying to advance the peace process in Western Sahara despite the delaying tactics of Morocco, the occupying state, and the many obstacles that it placed in the way of his mission, the statement concluded.

The UN Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, announced the appointment of the late President Horst Köhler as his Personal Envoy for Western Sahara on 16 August 2017, a mission that he carried out until his resignation from his post on 22 May 2019 “for health reasons”, as announced by the United Nations at the time.
