Boumerdes (Algeria), July 17, 2024 (SPS) - Sahrawi human rights activist and member of CODESA, Mahjoub Maliha, confirmed that looting of wealth in Western Sahara encourages war crimes and the genocide of the Sahrawi people, in a lecture on Sahrawi natural resources during the Summer University for Sahrawi Cadres.

The lecturer stressed that the systematic plundering of the wealth of the Sahrawi people is considered an "embodiment" of the Moroccan occupation and its repressive machinery, noting that it clearly contributes to obstructing international efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Western Sahara.

Mahjoub Maliha pointed out that Morocco does not have any right or legitimate authority over the natural resources of the Western Sahara region, as it is still included in the list of territories that have not yet enjoyed self-determination.

Legally, Mahjoub Maliha added, "Despite the clarity of the European Court of Justice's advisory opinion and its rulings, the European Union preferred to continue fueling the occupation and actively participating in the plundering of natural resources. And by adopting this position, the European Union and its member states, especially Spain, as the administering state in the eyes of international law, have become partners in the crimes committed in Western Sahara on a daily basis, whether through their participation or actual contribution."
