Spanish Parliament votes in favor of motion correcting Government's position on Western Sahara issue: "Support for Justice and Legitimacy of the Cause"

Madrid, 24 June 2024 (SPS) - Mr. Salamo Hammoudi Bachri, Head of Political Affairs at the Polisario Front Office in Spain, affirmed that the Spanish Parliament's vote on a motion calling for a correction of the government's position on the Western Sahara issue is a new "setback" for the ruling Socialist Party and a confirmation of full support for the legitimacy of the just Sahrawi cause, UN resolutions, and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination.

In a statement to Algerian Press Service (APS), the Sahrawi official explained that the Spanish People's Party's adherence to its motion supporting the Sahrawi cause and rejecting the position of its rival, the Socialist Party, which abandons the recognition of the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, freedom and independence, and its call on the coalition government led by Pedro Sanchez to comply with the will expressed by the House of Representatives in 2022 in defense of the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people, is nothing but "evidence of the victory of the Sahrawi cause and international legitimacy."

He added that the People's Party, which won the last legislative elections and has the largest popular base in Spain, submitted on June 20 a motion on the Western Sahara issue for a vote by the Spanish Parliament, including seven points all revolving around the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, increasing humanitarian support and facilitating the task of the UN envoy for Western Sahara.

The motion of the Spanish party received wide support from members of parliament, who voted last Thursday by a majority on the motion calling on the Prime Minister to review his position on the Western Sahara issue and return to the position of historical neutrality, which remains a consensus for the rest of the political actors, with the exception of the ruling Socialist Workers' Party.

The People's Party's motion also called for the need to commit to keeping the airspace and maritime areas of Western Sahara under Spanish administration, as recognized by the United Nations.
