“Address by Mr Brahim Ghali, President of the Sahrawi Republic, Secretary-General of the Frente POLISARIO

51st Anniversary of the Launching of the Armed Struggle

20 May 2024

In the name of Allah, the most Merciful, the most Compassionate

Heroic Sahrawi people,

Militants of the Peoples’ Front for the Liberation of Saguia El-Hamra and Río de Oro (Frente POLISARIO),

Combatants of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army,

Dear Guests,

We commemorate these days the fifty-first anniversary of the founding of the Peoples’ Front for the Liberation of Saguia El-Hamra and Río de Oro (Frente POLISARIO) that led the armed struggle of the Sahrawi people against the colonial presence in our country.

On this occasion, we recall the founding figures, sons of the Sahrawi people, who were determined to lead the ranks and launch the war of national liberation. They had no weapons but determination, will and confidence in the power of their people and their categorical rejection of all forms of injustice, oppression, subordination, subservience, colonialism, and occupation.

We proudly recall the overwhelming response of the masses of our people, men, and women, young and elderly, from all over the country and beyond, who massively joined the struggle with a remarkable speed that baffled the foes, frustrated their expectations, and stunned allies and friends and won their respect.

We pay homage and bow to the pure souls of all the martyrs of the national cause, led by the Martyr of Freedom and Dignity, the Founder of the Revolution, El Wali Mustafa Sayed, and Martyr President Mohamed Abdelaziz, whose sacrifices stand as a symbol of heroism, immortality, and loyalty.

Today we remember with great pride how the Peoples’ Front for the Liberation of Saguia El-Hamra and Río de Oro (Frente POLISARIO) was able, in a very short period of time, and thanks to the rallying of the masses of our people, to become the first political force in Western Sahara and the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people as recognised by the United Nations Visiting Mission in May 1975.

With genius, wisdom, and efficiency, the Frente POLISARIO was able to create the foundations of the inevitable victory, through intensifying the struggle on all fronts, especially the battlefield, the declaration of all-inclusive national unity and the proclamation of the Sahrawi State as a practical and eternal embodiment of the will of the Sahrawi people to live with freedom and dignity in their own national land.

We also recall the unique experience in which the Sahrawi people, led by the Frente POLISARIO, combined the tasks of the state building and liberation, where the heroic feats on the battlefronts coincided with achievements on the political, social, economic, administrative, and service fronts, while the Sahrawi State was consolidating its institutions and assuming its rightful place internationally, including by becoming a founding member of the African Union.

This is only a fraction of the glorious and impeccable history of a proud people and a just cause whose victory is inevitable. It is a war of national liberation, guaranteed by the masses who are determined and committed to struggle and resistance, with great sacrifices, with sweat, tears and suffering, in the camps of pride and dignity, in the Occupied Territory, in southern Morocco,  in the diaspora, and in prisons and detention centres, where Sahrawi women have played a pivotal and pioneering role, which is worthy of all appreciation and praise.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This anniversary is special, unique, and distinct as it coincides with the national day of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army, and you know who the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army is, the protector and the torchbearer, the spearhead in the battle of existence, the conqueror of the enemies, the maker of glorious and heroic history, the epitome of pride, dignity and magnanimity, which has always been at the cutting edge in making the difference and effecting decisive, positive and qualitative transformations on the battlefield and in the war in general.

We pay tribute to these stalwart heroes, the combatants of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army, with warm and special greetings, deep appreciation, reverence, and gratitude. A tribute to the brave heroes, stationed on the frontlines, who do not pass a day without destroying the strongholds and fortifications of the enemy and causing great losses of lives and equipment in its ranks.

On a day like this, we would also like to pay tribute to the Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails and to their families, to the heroic men and women of the Independence Uprising in the Occupied territories, in southern Morocco and at Moroccan universities, as they engage in battles of steadfastness and resistance against the brutal repression and the suffocating siege imposed by the occupying state of Morocco.

On such a memorable day, the Sahrawi people cannot fail to remember with pride, appreciation and gratitude all the brothers, friends and allies who have stood by their just cause, foremost among them the sisterly Algeria, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which is leading today, from the highest platform in the world, the battle to defend the implementation of international law, especially in Western Sahara and Palestine. It is an occasion to reiterate our condemnation of the crimes committed against defenceless Palestinians, particularly in besieged Gaza, as well as our demand that the Palestinian people be enabled to establish their independent State with East Jerusalem as its capital.

As we warmly salute the movement of solidarity with the Sahrawi cause throughout the world, we note the advanced and practical step embodied by the convening of the fifth session of the Diplomatic Forum of Solidarity with the Sahrawi People among our hospitable people to coincide with this anniversary. We are proud of the great role played in this regard by South Africa, the country of Nelson Mandela, the symbol of struggle for freedom in the world, together with all the distinguished members of the Forum.

We once again warn against the consequences of the expansionism and aggression pursued by the occupying state of Morocco, including through supporting transnational organised crime gangs and terrorist groups, spreading drugs on a large scale, promoting the agendas of well-known colonial expansionist powers, and creating tension and instability in the region. We reach out to the States and peoples of the region to cooperate and coordinate to address these imminent threats.

In this context, we commend the distinguished historical relations between the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and the Sahrawi Republic, and we are determined to strengthen our relations in the interests of our two peoples and consolidate the special ties that unite them in terms of history, neighbourliness, and common destiny.

We call on the United Nations to expedite the implementation of the mandate entrusted to its Mission in Western Sahara, namely the holding of a referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people in accordance with the 1991 UN-OAU Settlement Plan, the only realistic and practicable agreement that was accepted and concluded by the two parties to the conflict, the Frente POLISARIO and Morocco, and approved unanimously by the UN Security Council.

We also call on the African Union to implement the principles and objectives of its Constitutive Act with regard to the conflict between the two Member States, the Sahrawi Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco, and in particular the respect for borders existing on achievement of independence.

We cannot fail to remind the Spanish Government of its legal, political, and moral responsibility towards the Sahrawi people as the administering power responsible for bringing to conclusion the decolonisation of Western Sahara.

We also demand once again that France stop supporting unconditionally Morocco’s aggressive expansionism in flagrant contradiction to the ideals and principles cherished by the French Republic.

We equally call on the European Union to respect the dictates and decisions of the European Court of Justice, not to violate the first international fundamental right, and thus to refrain from signing any agreement affecting the territorial and maritime spaces or the airspace of Western Sahara, because the Territory and the Kingdom of Morocco are separate and distinct territories in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Sahrawi people took their sovereign decision more than five decades ago by declaring their national liberation war, which will continue, intensify, and vary in its forms and methods, including through the armed struggle that has been resumed since 13 November 2020 as a response to the torpedoing by the Moroccan army of the ceasefire agreement concluded with the Sahrawi army.

The Saharawi people have concretely demonstrated their ability to overcome all challenges, manoeuvres, conspiracies, and machinations, especially at a time when the occupying state of Morocco is pursuing the most insidious policies to thwart our achievements and target our domestic front using drugs and the like in its endeavours to sow discord and undermine our national cohesion and unity.

On your National Day, we address you, brave and stalwart heroes, the combatants of the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army.

Veterans, combatants, cadres, commanders, and personnel of our towering Military Institution.

We must not forget that the expansionist invaders are continuing their war of aggression against our peaceful people. They have driven us from our homes unjustly and aggressively. They have displaced our children and women.

They continue their barbaric systematic repression against our defenceless citizens in the Occupied Territory and southern Morocco, including Sahrawi civilian prisoners in Moroccan jails and their families.

Our gallant army, who is well suited to the mission, must escalate and advance the armed struggle until the last invading soldier is expelled from our homeland and our people return to their country enjoying their freedom, dignity, and sovereignty over their entire State, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. Le us live up to the expectations and aspirations of our people.

Long live the Peoples’ Front for the Liberation of Saguia El-Hamra and Río de Oro (Frente POLISARIO)

Long live the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army.

With the Gun we shall regain Freedom.

The Masses are the Guarantor of the War of Liberation.

Intensifying the Armed Struggle to expel the Invader and regain Sovereignty.”
