Managua, 17 May 2026 (SPS) – The Republic of Nicaragua and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic reaffirmed the historic ties of friendship and solidarity that unite the two countries.
During an official ceremony marking the 53rd anniversary of the founding of the POLISARIO Front and the Armed Struggle, held at the National Assembly of Nicaragua with the participation of state officials and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Nicaragua, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Mr. Abderrahman Mohamed Yeslem, expressed the Sahrawi people’s gratitude for Nicaragua’s steadfast support and permanent backing. He stressed that the founding of the POLISARIO Front marked the beginning of a historic struggle for the freedom, independence, and self-determination of the Sahrawi people.
The Sahrawi diplomat highlighted the historic and excellent relations between the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) and the POLISARIO Front.
For his part, the President of the National Assembly, Gustavo Porras, emphasized that Nicaragua, like the Sahrawi people, has historically faced struggles against expansionism in defense of its sovereignty.
Nicaragua’s Co-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Valdrack Jaentschke, underlined the historic identification of the Nicaraguan people with the struggle of the Sahrawi people for independence, sovereignty, and resistance against colonialism and foreign domination. He recalled that the recognition of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic by the Sandinista People’s Revolution on September 6, 1979, constituted one of the first acts of international solidarity by the Nicaraguan government.
