AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security receives Permanent Representative of Sahrawi Republic

Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), August 21, 2026 (SPS) – African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Bankole Adeoye received today, Friday, at the headquarters of the African Peace and Security Council in Addis Ababa, the Permanent Representative of the Sahrawi Republic to Ethiopia and the African Union, Ambassador Lamine Baali.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest, particularly the latest political and security developments on the continent and ways to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the two sides, in a manner that contributes to supporting the African Union’s efforts to consolidate peace, stability and development across the continent.

The Sahrawi ambassador reviewed the latest developments concerning the national cause, stressing the pivotal role of the African Union in defending the principles of international legitimacy and international law, respecting peoples’ right to self-determination, and resolving conflicts through peaceful means, as firmly established principles in the AU Constitutive Act and its decisions.

He highlighted the gains achieved by the Sahrawi cause at both the continental and international levels, emphasizing the importance of continuing the efforts of the relevant African institutions to defend the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.

The two sides agreed to continue consultations and coordination on issues of mutual interest, amid the growing challenges and crises facing peace and security in Africa and around the world.

The meeting was attended, alongside the Sahrawi ambassador, by Embassy Counsellor Aman Sidi Abdallah, while African officials from the African Peace and Security Directorate also attended.
