Shaheed El Hafed, April 17, 2026 (SPS) – The General Union of Workers of Saguia El Hamra and Rio de Oro (UGTSARIO) received a delegation from Emilia-Romagna that included government members, parliamentarians, political parties, trade unions, civil society organizations, activists, and journalists, as part of an institutional visit initiated by the Polisario Front’s representative in Italy, Ms. Fatma El Mahfoud.
The Italian delegation had the opportunity to learn about the role of UGTSARIO and the Sahrawi labor experience. The meeting also allowed for an evaluation of the main projects linking UGTSARIO with Italian trade unions, particularly model cooperatives aimed at providing job opportunities and achieving economic empowerment.
The delegation praised the role of UGTSARIO in supporting these cooperatives and projects, and presented an overview of the role of political parties and parliamentary blocs in defending the Sahrawi people, their struggle, and the protection of natural resources in occupied Western Sahara.
The Italian delegation reaffirmed its supportive positions toward the Sahrawi people and their just cause, and denounced the illegal Moroccan occupation.
UGTSARIO Secretary-General, Mr. Nafie Ahmed Mohamed, in his speech on the occasion, praised the visit as a reflection of the bonds of solidarity with the Sahrawi cause and Sahrawi workers, calling for strengthening joint cooperation to help develop and diversify programs.
The meeting was attended on the Sahrawi labor side by members of the National Council, including members of the central executive office, regional secretaries, and representatives of professional and intellectual unions.
