Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 15 April 2025 (SPS) – Algeria has achieved a major diplomatic victory by winning a seat on the Peace and Security Council of the African Union, following elections held on the morning of Tuesday, April 15, during the extraordinary session of the AU Executive Council (Foreign Ministers) at the Union’s headquarters in Addis Ababa.
This overwhelming victory reaffirms the rising status of the New Algeria on both continental and international scenes. It reflects the high regard in which Algerian diplomacy is held by African partners, who see Algeria as a force for peace, acting with independence, transparency, and commitment to its historical principles of defending just causes and promoting peace and stability throughout the continent.
Despite desperate attempts by the Kingdom of Morocco to obstruct this victory during the AU summit last February 2025, Algeria managed to assert itself thanks to its clear vision and unwavering commitment to serving peace in Africa, especially in the northern region of the continent.
Rabat had entered the race for Council membership during the previous summit in an effort to weaken Algeria’s presence within AU bodies. However, a set of diplomatic setbacks—most notably the failure of Morocco’s candidacy for Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the deserved victory of Algeria’s candidate for the same position—forced Rabat to retreat, leaving the field open for Algeria.
Algeria advanced with confidence and resolve, reaping the rewards of its principled stances on all African and international just causes.
With this historic win, Algeria once again proves that it is a source of proposals and a voice of reason in Africa, thanks to a mature diplomacy rooted in the struggle of a people who sacrificed 1.5 million martyrs for their independence—a legacy that ensures Algeria’s voice is heard and its positions widely respected.
