Canary Islands (Spain), March 18, 2025 (SPS) – The 16th Conference of the Canary Islands Trade Unions has reaffirmed the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and independence, condemning the continued Moroccan occupation of parts of the Sahrawi Republic.

At the conclusion of its proceedings, the conference approved a series of recommendations supporting the Sahrawi people and its just cause, reiterating the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

It condemned the ongoing Moroccan occupation and the plundering of Sahrawi natural resources in collusion with foreign companies. In the same context, it called for the unconditional release of Sahrawi detainees held in Moroccan prisons.

The conference urged the Spanish government, as the administering power of the territory under international law, to assume its historical and legal responsibility to decolonize Western Sahara.

It also renewed its call to the United Nations and the European Union, in particular, to take concrete measures to pressure the occupying Moroccan state to respect the legitimate rights of the Sahrawi people to independence, freedom, and dignity.
