Mexico City, 24 July 2025 (SPS) – The President of the Mexican Senate, Mr. Gerardo Fernández Noroña, expressed his "profound disappointment" with the international community's inability to compel Morocco to hold a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people, as well as its failure to stop the systematic plundering of Sahrawi resources by the Moroccan occupier.
These remarks came during a courtesy and consultation visit by Mr. Mahila Massoud, Algeria's Ambassador to Mexico, to the Mexican Senate President—an influential member of the ruling MORENA party - last Monday. The warm reception reflected the depth of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Mr. Noroña emphasized that "Morocco, like it has done with many others, persistently invited me to visit, but I categorically refused out of respect for the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination."
Additionally, both parties condemned the atrocities faced by the Palestinian people under occupation - mass killings, sieges, and starvation - while the international community stands idly by, limited to mere condemnations in the face of repeated violations of basic Palestinian human rights.
