Mayor of Mérida warmly welcomes Sahrawi children

Mérida (Spain), 23 July 2025 (SPS) – The Mayor of Mérida, Antonio Rodríguez Osuna, accompanied by Allali El Mami, the Polisario Front's representative in Extremadura, and Juan Eusebio Solís, president of the solidarity association "NUR"  with the Sahrawi people, welcomed a group of Sahrawi children who will spend their summer vacation in the city as part of the Holidays in Peace program.

During the welcoming ceremony, the mayor expressed his deep gratitude for the role played by the Spanish host families and called for respect of the Sahrawi people's legitimate rights to freedom and self-determination, as reported by local press.

For his part, the Polisario Front's representative in Extremadura, thanked Mérida City Council for opening its doors to Sahrawi children, praising all the families who opened their homes and hearts to welcome Sahrawi children during these months.

The autonomous community of Extremadura has welcomed 145 Sahrawi boys and girls under the Holidays in Peace program, which allows refugee children from Western Sahara to spend the summer with host families, away from the harsh conditions of the Sahrawi camps.
