Algiers, 22 February 2025 (SPS) – Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat and the Polisario Front’s representative at the United Nations and coordinator with MINURSO, reaffirmed that the Sahrawi people remain steadfast in its right to self-determination, independence, and its legitimate right to resist and defend themselves by all legitimate means, including armed struggle.

This statement was made during an interview conducted by the Sahrawi diplomat yesterday with the Algerian National Television on the program "Special Meeting," hosted by the esteemed journalist Fawzi Ait Ali.

When asked about the most significant achievements of the Sahrawi people as they prepare to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, the Sahrawi diplomat pointed out that one of the most important accomplishments is the establishment of the Sahrawi state as an irreversible national, regional, and international reality, as well as the recognition of the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence at the United Nations level.

In response to a question about France’s role in the Security Council, the Sahrawi diplomat emphasized that it is no secret that France has been and remains the primary supporter of the Moroccan occupation state since its invasion of Sahrawi territory. He stressed that the recent hostile positions taken by France are successive steps in escalating its antagonism toward the Sahrawi people.

Commenting on a question regarding the Personal Envoy’s suggestion of the possibility of "partitioning the territory," the Polisario Front’s representative at the UN and coordinator with MINURSO affirmed that the "partition" of a territory under decolonization is unacceptable in both form and substance, as it undermines the essence of the right to self-determination. He recalled that it was the Moroccan occupation state that partitioned Western Sahara with neighboring Mauritania.

Regarding the Sahrawi side’s position on this matter, the Polisario Front and the Sahrawi Republic categorically reject such proposals and never engage in discussions of this nature.

On the future of negotiations, the Sahrawi diplomat noted that this depends on the role of the Security Council and the UN mediator. He reaffirmed that the Sahrawi side remains open to direct negotiations with the Moroccan occupation state to reach a just and lasting solution that guarantees the Sahrawi people’s inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination and independence.

In conclusion, the Polisario Front’s representative at the UN and coordinator with MINURSO expressed hope that the Moroccan occupation state would realize the impossibility of continuing its expansionist policies and demonstrate the necessary political courage to achieve this solution. He emphasized the need to spare the region the scourges of war and instability and to build a shared future based on mutual respect and respect for the sovereignty of all states, including the Sahrawi Republic.
