Tripoli (Libya), December 11, 2024 (SPS) – The Sahrawi Republic is participating in a meeting of the African Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (African CDC) regarding the cross-border surveillance system, held in the capital of Libya, Tripoli.
This meeting aims to enhance monitoring, coordination, and cross-border cooperation to combat Monkeypox in North Africa.
Key attendees included the Libyan Deputy Minister of Health, the Deputy Director of Libya's National Centre for Disease Control, the Regional Director of the African CDC North Office, as well as representatives from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and health experts from the seven member countries of the African Union, along with representatives from technical partners and economic and regional groups in North Africa.
The meeting will discuss ways to improve regional and national cooperation for coordinated responses to Monkeypox, develop surveillance systems (event-based and mortality-based) for early detection and reporting, coordinate surveillance at border points to monitor cross-border movements, ensure effective risk communication and community engagement, and strengthen regional and national capacities in laboratory testing and response efforts.
The Sahrawi Republic was represented at this meeting by a delegation from the Ministry of Public Health, composed of Dr. Saleh Mohamed Lamín, Central Director of Veterinary and Animal Health, Al-Aiza Azreibih, Head of the Central Department of Health Statistics, and Saleh Omar, Head of the Archives and Employment Department of the Ministry's Personnel Directorate.
