Leipzig (Germany), November 11, 2024 (SPS) - The Oriental Institute at Leipzig University hosted a lecture focused on the Sahrawi cause, centering on human rights and new colonial structures in Western Sahara.

Activist Isabel Lorenzo, a researcher at the Center for African Studies at the University of Porto in Portugal, presented an overview of the human rights situation in the occupied cities of Western Sahara and the conditions of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons. She highlighted the police siege and systematic repression imposed by the Moroccan authorities on civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.

The lecture also addressed the intimidation tactics used by Moroccan occupation forces to strip Sahrawis of their identity, as well as the situation of the Gdeim Izik group in Moroccan prisons.

Isabel Lorenzo also discussed the humanitarian situation in the Sahrawi refugee camps, emphasizing the reliance on humanitarian aid and the decline in support directed toward refugees amid difficult conditions.
