Caracas (Venezuela), May 15, 2024 (SPS) – A Sahrawi delegation participates in the work of the Caribbean Regional Seminar, organized by the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (C-24) of the United Nations General Assembly, in Caracas, from 14 to 16 May within the framework of the Fourth International Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism (2021-2030).

The seminar is organized under the theme “Pursuing goals and addressing needs of the Non-Self-Governing Territories”.

The Special Committee will consider the conclusions and recommendations of the seminar at its substantive session to be held from 10 to 21 June, and subsequently transmit them to the General Assembly.

During the opening ceremony of the seminar, Venezuela's Vice President Delcy Rodriguez delivered her remarks, in which she affirmed Venezuela's position against colonialism and imperialism and its principled support for the rights of peoples to self-determination and independence, highlighting her country's strong and steadfast support for the Sahrawi issue and the just struggle of the Sahrawi people.

The Polisario Front is represented in this seminar by a delegation that includes Dr. Sidi Mohamed Omar, member of the National Secretariat and the Polisario Front’s Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, Mr. Mohamed Salem Arguibi, the Sahrawi Ambassador to Venezuela, and Mr. Mohamed Azrouk, the Ambassador-designate to the Caribbean region.

The Representative of the Polisario Front at the United Nations and the Coordinator with MINURSO is scheduled to deliver a speech during the work of the second day before the seminar on the issue of Western Sahara as one of the issues registered on the agenda of the seminar.

The Sahrawi delegation meet with several participating delegations, where they discussed bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Sahrawi issue, especially at the United Nations level, in light of the Moroccan occupying state’s continued violation and demolition of the ceasefire on November 13, 2020.

It is worth noting that there are 17 Non-Self-Governing Territories under the purview of the Special Committee, including Western Sahara, which the Special Committee included on the list of territories subject to decolonization in its report dated December 6, 1963, which was approved by the General Assembly in its resolution 1956 (XVIII) of December 11, 1963.
