Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) 17 April 2025 (SPS) – The African Union’s newly elected Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development (HHS), Ghanaian Ambassador Ama Adoma Twum-Amoah, conducted a working visit on Thursday to the Embassy of the Sahrawi Republic in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

She was received by the Sahrawi Republic’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Lamine Baali, in the presence of Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Malainin Lakhal, along with assistants to the Commissioner.

The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on the overall humanitarian situation across the African continent and the growing challenges faced by the AU Commission, particularly in light of increasing crises related to displacement, refugees, and climate change.

Both parties emphasized the importance of coordinating continental and international efforts to mobilize the necessary support for those affected by natural disasters and conflicts, and to provide a comprehensive and sustainable response to urgent humanitarian needs.

For his part, the Sahrawi Ambassador reaffirmed the Sahrawi Republic’s unwavering support for the Commission on HHS, as well as for the new leadership of the African Union as a whole. He confirmed his country’s readiness to contribute to the success of the programs and policies under the new Commissioner’s portfolio.

This meeting comes within the context of a new dynamic within the African Union following the election of Ambassador Ama Adoma Twum-Amoah and other newly appointed commissioners, in addition to the AU Commission Chairperson from Djibouti and his Algerian deputy, during the latest AU Summit held last February 2025.

Twum-Amoah is considered one of the prominent diplomatic figures in West Africa. She has held high-level positions in Ghana’s diplomatic service, including as Ambassador to several East African countries and as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Member states, including the Sahrawi Republic, are counting on her extensive experience to strengthen continental humanitarian action and achieve the African Union’s strategic goals in the areas of social protection, health, and community development. (SPS)
