Copenhagen, September 30, 2026 (SPS) – Sidi Mohamed Omar, Polisario Front Representative to the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, stressed that enabling the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and independence is the only path to a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict.
Speaking at a Nordic conference on Western Sahara held at the Danish Parliament, Sidi Mohamed Omar recalled that the territory has been on the UN list of Non-Self-Governing Territories since 1963, underscoring the international legal framework governing the decolonization process.
He noted that the UN-led peace process, launched in 1991, has yet to achieve its objective of allowing the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination, stressing that the referendum envisaged under the settlement plan has not been held.
The Sahrawi diplomat warned against approaches that seek to alter the established framework of the decolonization process, stressing that the status of Western Sahara as a Non-Self-Governing Territory remains clear under international law.
He concluded that the principle of territorial acquisition by force cannot provide a basis for a lasting settlement, reaffirming that the Sahrawi people must be allowed to freely and democratically determine their own future.
