Stockholm (Sweden) 21 May 2026 (SPS) – Sahrawi human rights defender Ms. Aminatou Haidar held a meeting yesterday, May 20, at the Swedish Parliament with the Swedish Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Sahrawi People, during which they discussed the latest developments concerning the Sahrawi national cause and the deteriorating human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
The meeting provided an opportunity to brief members of the parliamentary group on the various serious violations suffered by Sahrawi civilians from the Moroccan authorities of occupation, including restrictions targeting human rights activists, the continued suffering of Sahrawi political prisoners in Moroccan prisons, as well as the systematic plundering of Sahrawi natural resources.
The Sahrawi human rights defender also highlighted the danger of ongoing attempts aimed at depriving the Sahrawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence, stressing that any settlement that fails to guarantee this legitimate right, which is a fundamental pillar of all human rights, remains contrary to international legality.
During the meeting, Aminatou Haidar emphasized the need for the international community, and European parliamentarians in particular, to act in order to pressure the Moroccan occupying state to put an end to the ongoing violations against Sahrawis and to respect human rights in Western Sahara.
For their part, members of the Swedish Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Sahrawi People expressed their deep interest in the developments of the Sahrawi issue, reaffirming their solidarity with the Sahrawi people and their support for their legitimate right to freedom and self-determination.
Sahrawi human rights defender Aminatou Haidar arrived in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, yesterday as part of a series of political and human rights meetings and activities aimed at raising awareness about the Sahrawi cause and shedding light on the human rights situation in the occupied territories of Western Sahara.
