UN General Assembly: Participants defend Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination

New York (United Nations), 28 September 2025 (SPS) - During the high-level week of the 80th UN General Assembly session, speaker after speaker took to the United Nations podium to defend the Sahrawi people’s legitimate rights, particularly their right to self-determination.

In his address to the General Assembly, Venezuelan Foreign Minister, Yvan Gil Pinto, reaffirmed his country's support for the legitimate demands of the Sahrawi people, calling for respect of the international law.

For his part, Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister, Amon Murwira, once again expressed his country's position supporting the rights of the Palestinian and Sahrawi peoples, affirming Zimbabwe's “unwavering solidarity” with both peoples in their legitimate struggle for freedom.

Belize Prime Minister, Johnny Briceño, stressed “the need to end the denial of the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and freedom,” stating that “all nations should have the right to choose their own path.”

Leaders from Namibia, South Africa, and Spain voiced their support, during their speeches at the General Assembly, for the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination, emphasizing the need to resolve the Western Saharan conflict in accordance with international law and UN resolutions.

They also expressed their commitment to continue backing UN efforts aimed at strengthening international peace and security.
