Yokohama (Japan), August 22, 2025 (SPS) - The proceedings of the 9th TICAD Summit in Yokohama concluded today, Friday, emphasizing the rejection of any attempt to divide African unity.
The summit concluded under the presidency of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço (the current Chairperson of the African Union), African Union Commission Chairperson Mr. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Africa, Ms. Cristina Duarte, Mr. Xu Haoliang, Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Mr. Makhtar Diop, representing the President of the World Bank.
The second day of the summit featured interventions from heads of member states on trade, investment, capacity building, economy, and the exchange of expertise through the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union's Agenda 2063.
The summit adopted the Declaration of the 9th TICAD Summit. Its preamble emphasized the partnership between Japan and the member states of the African Union. The first paragraph of the declaration affirmed that "Japan and the member states of the African Union, along with the other co-organizers, particularly the African Union Commission, the United Nations, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Bank..."
Despite Morocco's repeated objection to this paragraph, it was adopted by consensus. Morocco found itself isolated and alone in its unrealistic demand, which reflects bad faith towards the African Union, its unity, and its continuous efforts to divide African unity. This serves as additional confirmation that the 9th TICAD Summit, held in Yokohama, Japan, rejected any attempt to divide African unity.
The Sahrawi Republic participated in the 9th TICAD Summit with a delegation headed by the Prime Minister, member of the National Secretariat, Mr. Bouchraya Hammoudi Bayoun, and included the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, and the Ambassador Permanent Representative to the African Union, Mr. Lamine Baali.
