Cape Town (South Africa), 15 August 2025 (SPS) – South Africa has reaffirmed its principled and steadfast position in support of the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination and independence. The country emphasized that this stance stems from its historical commitment to opposing colonialism and supporting liberation causes in Africa and worldwide.
This came during a meeting on Thursday between the Sahrawi delegation participating in the African Water Summit and Ms. Bebe Magudulela, South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation, on the sidelines of the summit hosted in Cape Town.
The minister expressed her country’s readiness to support and develop practical partnerships with the Sahrawi state in the field of water, as well as to enhance cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.
During the meeting, Adda Brahim Ahmim, a member of the National Secretariat, the Sahrawi Minister of Water and Environment, highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries in water-related fields and expanding this collaboration to include other sectors of shared interest.
The Sahrawi minister stressed that this important event is taking place amid difficult circumstances faced by the Sahrawi people due to occupation and reduced foreign support. He explained that the Sahrawi government is implementing a comprehensive strategy focused on increasing production, enhancing storage, and ensuring water access for all citizens.
He emphasized the need to direct support to countries and peoples lacking sufficient capabilities, helping to fund projects and implement strategies aimed at enabling the African continent to secure safe and sustainable water resources.
