Paris, 2 November 2026 (SPS) – The French Communist Party has reaffirmed the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to freely exercise self-determination, in accordance with the UN Charter and relevant international resolutions.
In a statement issued last Friday, the party condemned the diplomatic deadlock at the UN Security Council over the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), warning that the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination must not be subjected to geopolitical rivalries.
The party stressed that Western Sahara remains a non-self-governing territory on the UN list of territories awaiting decolonisation, rejecting attempts to impose the Moroccan proposal as the sole framework for negotiations.
It also criticised the French government's support for the US draft resolution, arguing that such a position departs from international law and undermines prospects for a just and mutually acceptable solution.
The French Communist Party called for MINURSO's mandate and operations to be maintained, stressing the mission's role in monitoring the ceasefire and supporting efforts towards a political settlement.
It urged the United Nations to ensure the mission's continuity and resume credible negotiations under UN auspices, based on full respect for the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination and to freely determine their future.
