El Aaiun Wilaya, August 5, 2026 (SPS) – The President of the Republic, Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, has reaffirmed that a just, final, and lasting solution to the conflict in Western Sahara can only be achieved by guaranteeing the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
In his address at the opening of the Fifth Congress of the Union of Students of Saguia El Hamra and Rio de Oro, President Ghali stressed that the only just, final, and durable settlement of the Western Sahara conflict lies in ensuring the Sahrawi people's inalienable, non-negotiable, and non-transferable right to self-determination and independence through a free, transparent, and democratic process, in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly.
President Ghali added that the Sahrawi national cause has witnessed rapid developments in recent months, particularly following the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 last October. He said these developments have revealed signs of a dangerous attempt to circumvent the Charter and resolutions of the United Nations concerning Western Sahara, including efforts to bypass the rights and the will of the sole sovereign authority in the matter—the Sahrawi people.
The President of the Republic noted that these developments are taking place at a time when the world is experiencing unprecedented changes, wars, and blatant foreign interventions, alongside a troubling trend toward undermining the principles of international law and the rights of peoples, replacing them with the rule of force and the dominance of power and narrow interests.
President Ghali further stated that the mounting pressure currently facing the Sahrawi national cause, although different in form and greater in intensity, is a repetition of what occurred during the 1970s. "Just as it did then," he said, "the Sahrawi people have made their choice: to remain steadfast in defending the rights guaranteed to them under international law and to uphold them through all legitimate means."
He emphasized that this sovereign decision of the Sahrawi people requires all loyal sons and daughters of the nation—students and youth, women and men, executives, professionals, and national elites, wherever they may be—to further strengthen national unity, intensify their commitment and readiness, and remain prepared to confront all possible challenges within the framework of unity, national consensus, and unwavering support for the principles and objectives of the Polisario Front, the sole legitimate representative of the Sahrawi people.
