Luanda (Angola), June 26, 2026 (SPS) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, was received on Friday in the Angolan capital, Luanda, by the Secretary of State for Foreign Relations of the Republic of Angola, Ms. Esmeralda Bravo Conde da Silva Mendonça, in the presence of the Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic to Angola, Mr. Hamdi El Khalil.
The meeting took place on behalf of Angola’s Minister of Foreign Relations and the President of the Republic of Angola, who were both on official missions outside the country. During the reception, the Sahrawi Foreign Minister, acting as Special Envoy of the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, delivered a written message addressed to his Angolan counterpart, the President of the Republic of Angola, Mr. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço.
The visit forms part of the ongoing political dialogue between the Sahrawi Republic and the Republic of Angola, as well as the strong historical relations between the two countries, which have been founded on friendship, solidarity, and cooperation for decades.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the Angolan Secretary of State to present the candidacy of Ambassador Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko for the position of Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the 2027–2031 term. The Sahrawi Foreign Minister expressed the Sahrawi Republic’s support for this candidacy, praising the ambassador’s distinguished professional and diplomatic career and the work she carried out during her tenure as the African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment.
Both sides reaffirmed the strength of bilateral relations between the Sahrawi Republic and Angola, which date back to 1976, when Angola became one of the first countries in the world to recognize the Sahrawi Republic following its proclamation. Since then, Angola has consistently defended the inalienable right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination and independence, in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
