Moscow, February 13, 2026 (SPS) – The Algerian Ambassador to the Russian Federation, Mr. Toufik Jouamaa, affirmed that the process of liberating the African continent will not be complete as long as the territory of Western Sahara has not gained its independence.

He noted that decolonization in Africa began in the 1960s, and therefore Western Sahara remains the last colony on the African continent.

Mr. Jouamaa, during his participation in a roundtable held at the headquarters of the Communist Party (Communists of Russia) on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Republic, stated that supporting the people of the Sahrawi Republic is a matter of principle, as the Algerian people also suffered from the scourge of colonialism and sacrificed dearly to achieve their freedom and independence. He emphasized that “when we speak about the people of Western Sahara, we are speaking about this people’s right to self-determination, which is one of the fundamental rights enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. Therefore, this is a matter of international legality and respect for international law.”

He added that the Algerian people also highly appreciate the position of the Russian authorities in support of the right of the people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to self-determination, expressing hope that this support will continue and grow stronger, as “the issue of Western Sahara now stands at the threshold of a critical stage, and it is important that global solidarity increases and becomes more effective.”
