Addis Ababa, 12 February 2026 (SPS)— The 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) concluded today at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, wrapping up two days of deliberations on key political, economic and institutional priorities facing the continent.
The Session was attended by a Sahrawi delegation headed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, accompanied by the Sahrawi Permanent Representative, Lamine Baali, the Deputy Permanent Representative, Amb. Malainin Lakha, and Cultural and Media Attache, Ergueibi Abdalahi.
The session, which brought together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and other senior officials from AU Member States, reviewed reports and proposals ahead of the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to open this Saturday 14 February.
Throughout the session, ministers examined a broad range of issues central to Africa’s development agenda. Discussions focused on peace and security challenges across the continent, progress on regional integration, the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), food security, climate resilience, public health preparedness, and institutional reforms within the Union among others.
In addition, the Executive Council reviewed the AU’s budgetary framework and assessed the performance of various organs and specialized agencies. Ministers emphasized the need for sustainable financing of AU programs and reinforced commitments to good governance, democratic processes, and respect for constitutional order.
At the close of its deliberations, the Executive Council adopted a series of decisions, declarations and resolutions addressing the matters discussed. These instruments will guide the work of the Union’s organs and provide recommendations for consideration by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.
The outcomes of the Executive Council will now be transmitted to the Assembly, which will convene at the level of Heads of State and Government beginning Saturday. The 39th Ordinary Session is expected to deliberate on strategic priorities for the coming year and adopt final decisions on key policy matters before concluding on Sunday. (SPS)
