Havana, January 6, 2026 (SPS) – Members of the Ecuadorian Association of Friendship with the Sahrawi People (AEAPS) visited the Embassy of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) in Cuba and held an extensive discussion on the regional situation with diplomats led by Ambassador Brahim Mohamed Mahmud, Head of Mission on the island.
Pablo de la Vega and Susana Peñafiel, activists and human rights defenders who took part in the International Brigade “65 Years of Love for Cuba,” organized by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), expressed their concern regarding recent events in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the violation of international law by the United States, as well as its repercussions on ongoing national liberation processes.
They also explored the current situation of the Sahrawi cause and the policy of distortion and misinformation used by Moroccan diplomacy in the region to confuse public opinion and discourage social forces from providing support to the legitimate struggle of the Sahrawi people for their inalienable right to self-determination.
Finally, they discussed the participation of Cuban specialists in several academic initiatives through the Chair of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia at the University of Tifariti and its Third International Virtual Diploma in Studies on Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, scheduled for this quarter on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the SADR.
