Shaheed El Hafed, 10 December 2025 (SPS) — A delegation from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC – North Africa Regional Office) conducted a visit to the Sahrawi Republic this week, during which they met with the Minister of Health and senior officials from the Sahrawi Ministry of Health.
The delegation, led by Dr. Wissam Manqula, Regional Director of the North Africa Office, inspected the completion of the central cold-chain room project for the storage and refrigeration of vaccines, implemented by the Africa CDC and carried out by the World Food Programme.
The delegation also assessed the final stages of this important project, which forms part of the second phase of the “Saving Lives and Livelihoods” program launched by the Africa CDC with funding from the Mastercard Foundation (USA). The program aims to strengthen the capacities of African Union member states in disease prevention and response.
The African delegation held a meeting with the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Public Health, Salek Mohamed Omar, and the central ministry staff. The meeting focused on identifying major priorities in the fields of prevention, medical care, medicines and medical equipment, animal health, pharmacovigilance, training and studies, and public awareness and communication, with the aim of preparing a joint work plan with the Africa CDC for 2026.
The delegation was also received by the Minister of Public Health, Salek Baba Hassana, who presented a brief overview of the health situation in the Sahrawi Republic and highlighted the key challenges facing the health sector. He praised the prominent role played by the Africa CDC—particularly its regional office—in strengthening health cooperation among member states and advancing health programs at various levels.
