Madrid (Spain), 06 December 2025 (SPS) — The Spanish Federation of Institutions in Solidarity with the Sahrawi People (FEDISSAH) has renewed its firm commitment to supporting the Sahrawi cause until the Sahrawi people achieve their full freedom and independence.
In a statement published on its official website on Thursday, the Spanish Federation clarified that any agreement concerning Western Sahara made without the consent of the Sahrawi people is “contrary to international law” and “provides diplomatic cover for Morocco’s strategy aimed at consolidating its occupation of Western Sahara.”
The Federation reaffirmed that “Spain remains the administrative power responsible for the territory, and that no bilateral alliance, regardless of its strategic importance, can replace the mandate of the United Nations or abolish the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.”
The statement stressed that the issue of Western Sahara “is neither a secondary matter nor merely a diplomatic dispute, but a fundamental political issue that affects regional stability and undermines Spain’s international credibility.” It warned that “the Spanish government is placing itself outside the UN framework and weakening its moral standing in the field of human rights by adopting positions that legitimize the Moroccan occupation.”
The Federation also addressed the situation in the occupied Sahrawi territories, where “serious human rights violations have been documented, including police repression, persecution of activists, arbitrary arrests, torture, trials without legal guarantees, and the continued imprisonment of Sahrawi political detainees solely for defending their identity.”
The Federation further condemned the plundering of Sahrawi natural resources—including phosphates, fisheries, and renewable energy—by the Moroccan occupation, which exploits them for its own benefit without the consent of the Sahrawi people, in blatant violation of repeated rulings issued by the European Court of Justice.
One of the most prominent points raised in the statement was the warning about the serious repercussions for the Canary Islands. The Federation stressed that “Morocco’s ambitions in Western Sahara directly affect the delimitation of territorial waters, control of airspace, and access to deep-sea marine resources near the archipelago.”
