United States, 30 October 2025 (SPS) - In a strongly worded statement released on October 28, Not Forgotten International (NFI), a U.S.-based humanitarian organization working with Sahrawi refugees since 2000, has issued a statement calling on the U.S. government to revise its stance on Western Sahara and reject a proposed bill targeting the Polisario Front.
NFI criticized the U.S.-drafted resolution submitted to the UN Security Council, arguing it undermines the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination by framing Morocco’s 2007 Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for negotiations. The group said this approach contradicts calls for talks “without preconditions” and excludes the option of independence or a referendum, which international rulings and UN resolutions have repeatedly affirmed.
The organization also voiced opposition to U.S. bill H.R.4119, which seeks to investigate the designation of the Polisario Front — the Sahrawi national liberation movement — as a terrorist organization. NFI stressed that in 25 years of cooperation in the refugee camps, its teams have not witnessed actions by the Polisario that threaten U.S. nationals or national security. Instead, it described the Polisario’s struggle as a legitimate liberation effort following the collapse of a decades-long ceasefire.
NFI accused the bill of attempting to pressure the Polisario into accepting Morocco’s autonomy proposal and called for transparent, unconditional negotiations that respect international law and the Sahrawi people’s rights.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sahrawi dignity, empowerment, and the pursuit of fundamental freedoms and independence.
