Madrid, 27 August 2025 – Spanish associations in solidarity with the Sahrawi people affirmed this Wednesday that resolving the conflict in Western Sahara hinges on the serious and firm commitment from Spain (the administering power of the territory), the European Union, and the international community to end the illegal Moroccan occupation and guarantee the Sahrawi people's exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
This was stated in a joint declaration by the associations "Cantabria for Western Sahara" and "Alouda Cantabria," following the conclusion of the "Holidays in Peace" program. This summer, the program benefited 69 Sahrawi children in the Cantabria region, under the supervision of these two associations solidarity with the Sahrawi cause, and in coordination with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic government and the representation of the Polisario Front in the region.
The association "Cantabria for Western Sahara" hosted 49 children, including 14 with special needs, while the association "Alouda Cantabria" hosted 20 others.
During their stay, the children participated in various cultural, recreational, and educational activities. They also contributed to awareness-raising events highlighting the struggle of the Sahrawi people and their just cause.
The two associations affirmed that "the true and serious solution to the Sahrawi issue lies in the firm commitment from Spain, the European Union, and the international community to end the illegal occupation of Western Sahara and guarantee the Sahrawi people's exercise of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence."
They also emphasized that popular solidarity in Spain remains "a solid wall in support of the justice of the Sahrawi cause, but it cannot substitute for the political role and historical responsibility borne by the Spanish state and the international community."
For their part, the Spanish host families expressed their happiness at welcoming the children, considering this experience a precious human opportunity that reflects values of solidarity and a spirit of commitment towards the suffering of the Sahrawi people, especially under the difficult conditions they endure under Moroccan occupation.
