Minister of Foreign Affairs meets with UK Minister of State for Middle East and North Africa

London, 6 August 2025 (SPS) – A Sahrawi delegation led by Mr Mohamed Yeslem Beisat, Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, met on Tuesday at the Headquarters of the British Foreign Office, with Mr Hamish Falconer, UK Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, at the latter’s invitation.

Both sides discussed recent developments concerning the UN-led peace process in Western Sahara. This included the role that the UK could constructively play to support the efforts of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, in moving the peace process forward.

In doing so, both sides affirmed the importance of upholding the key principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and other international instruments as well as the basic norms of international law, including promotion and respect for human and peoples’ rights. 

Both sides underscored the need to achieve a just, peaceful, and mutually acceptable political solution that provides for the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination in accordance with relevant UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, as the only viable path towards achieving lasting peace in the region.

The Sahrawi side expressed its hope that the UK would use its influence constructively to advance the UN-led peace process towards solution and would actively participate in supporting peace, reconstruction, and sustainable development in post-conflict Western Sahara.

Both sides expressed their satisfaction with the high-level meeting and agreed to maintain dialogue to deepen understanding of issues of common interest.

The Sahrawi delegation included, alongside the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Affairs, Dr Sidi Mohamed Omar, Member of the National Secretariat, Frente POLISARIO Representative at the UN and Coordinator with MINURSO; Mohamed Sidati, Member of the National Secretariat, Frente POLISARIO Representative to the UK and Northern Ireland; and Sidi Breika, the outgoing Frente POLISARIO Representative to the UK.

On the British side, the meeting was attended by the Minister’s advisors and directors of relevant divisions of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
