Madrid (Spain), June 21, 2025 (SPS) – Participants in the 13th Congress of the Spanish Workers' Committees (CCOO) in Madrid unanimously endorsed a resolution supporting the Sahrawi people's just struggle and their legitimate cause. The resolution calls for intensified trade union efforts to pressure the international community to enforce international law and enable the Sahrawi people to exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

The resolution demanded respect for human rights in the occupied Sahrawi territories, the immediate release of Sahrawi political prisoners held in Moroccan jails, and an end to the plundering of natural resources and the exploitation of Western Sahara’s airspace and territorial waters.

Participants emphasized the need to break the media blackout imposed on the occupied territories of Western Sahara and condemned the silence of international media regarding the grave human rights violations committed by Moroccan occupation forces against the Sahrawi people.

The trade union resolution, which was approved by a vote of the congress delegates, denounced the official positions of France and Spain—particularly the Spanish government’s stance since 2022—which contradict international law and UN resolutions adopted by the General Assembly and the Security Council affirming the Sahrawi people’s inalienable right to self-determination.

The congress urged the Spanish government to comply with international law and relevant UN resolutions calling for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and independence.

A delegation from the General Union of Workers of Saguia el-Hamra and Río de Oro (UGTSARIO), led by Secretary-General Mr. Nafei Ahmed Mohamed and accompanied by the official in charge of international relations and cooperation, Mr. Mohamed Salem Hamma, participated in the congress. The delegation held meetings with participating trade unions and representatives of Spanish federations and regional branches.
