New York (United Nations), 10 June 2025 (SPS) - Member of the National Secretariat and Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO, Dr Sidi Mohamed Omar, stressed that, in honour of the memory of their martyrs and their sacrifices, the Sahrawi people will never accept the policy of fait accompli, and that they will continue their struggle and resistance by all legitimate means for the fulfilment of their non-negotiable national aspirations for freedom and independence.

The remark was made today during the statement delivered by the Representative of the Frente POLISARIO at the United Nations and Coordinator with MINURSO before the Substantive Session of the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples (C-24), which began on Monday at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Statement of the Frente POLISARIO on the Question of Western Sahara
Ambassador Sidi M. Omar
Substantive Session of the Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24)
New York, 10 June 2025

Madam Chair,
Distinguished Representatives of Member States,

It is my pleasure to address the Special Committee again on behalf of the Frente POLISARIO, the sole and legitimate Representative of the people of the Non-Self-Governing Territory of Western Sahara in accordance with relevant General Assembly and Security Council resolutions.

Fifty years ago, this Committee sent a fact-finding mission to Western Sahara. In its report, which was adopted by the Committee on the 7th of November 1975, the Visiting Mission underlined the following conclusions:

First, there was an overwhelming consensus among Sahrawis within the Territory in favour of independence and opposing any integration with Morocco and Mauritania.

Second, the Frente POLISARIO was the dominant political force in the Territory and enjoyed massive support from the population for its demand for independence.

Third, the General Assembly should take steps to enable the people of the Territory to decide their own future in complete freedom in accordance with resolution 1514 (XV) and other relevant resolutions of the General Assembly.

These conclusions are very much true today as they were fifty years ago.

The Sahrawi people have been enduring Morocco’s illegal occupation and brutal repression for almost fifty years. However, our people, under the leadership of their sole and legitimate Representative, the Frente POLISARIO, have never wavered in their legitimate struggle for freedom and independence.

Therefore, there is no alternative to the exercise by the Sahrawi people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence in accordance with General Assembly resolution 1514 (XV) through a free, fair and UN-supervised referendum.

Madam Chair,
Distinguished Representatives of Member States,

The colonialist “proposal” propagated by Morocco, the occupying state, and its apologists, is no more than a travesty and a manoeuvre through which the occupying state tries to “legitimise” its illegal occupation of Western Sahara and to deprive its people of their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.

Countries that are genuinely committed to upholding the core principles of the UN Charter, international law, peace and justice need to demonstrate their commitments by deeds, not only by words. Complacency and inaction lead only to emboldening the occupying state to persist in its misguided belief that it can impose a fait accompli by force in Occupied Western Sahara.

In concluding, our people remain committed to achieving a just and lasting peace, but we will never give up our right to self-determination and independence.

Yesterday, we commemorated the Martyrs’ Day to honour the men and women who have given their lives for the freedom and dignity of our people.

Today, in honour of the memory of our martyrs and their sacrifices, the Sahrawi people tell you and the entire world, loud and clear, that we will never accept the policy of fait accompli, and that we will continue our struggle and resistance by all legitimate means for the fulfilment of our non-negotiable national aspirations for freedom and independence.

I thank you for your attention.
